One of cameroon's most extraordinary landscapes
The village of Rhumsiki is situated in one of cameroon's most extraordinary landscapes: a 'lunar landscape' dominated by huge rock needles of up to a hundred meters high. Millions of years ago, they acted as 'chimneys' of the surrounding volcanoes. The craters disappeared over time due to erosion, after which the lava pipes became exposed and hardened into basalt. Led by local guides, you can take walks through the valleys, possibly to villages just across the border in Nigeria. The history of the Kapsiki, the ethnic group in this region, bears many similarities to that of the Dogon in Mali. Both groups fled into the mountains because they did not wish to be converted to Islam and eventually continued to live there. The architectural styles of the huts are also similar. In Rhumsiki you can also visit a very special soothsayer, he answers your questions with the help of a freshwater crab. It is placed in a gourd, filled with sand, sticks and stones. Then the gourd is covered and the crab walks around in the dark. From the fallen sticks and stones, the fortune teller can read the answer.
