Produced using ancient methods
Although relatively unknown as a wine producing country, wine has been produced in Georgiafor over 8000 years. Often by the locals on a small scale for their own use, but also by the large winemakers whose wine is exported abroad. The Georgian wines contain special grape varieties and are becoming increasingly well known. Famous is the so-called orange wine, made from white grapes that are fermented with peel and all and matured in pottery jugs, called kvevris. The jugs are then dug into the ground. This traditional method has been around for centuries. There are nine wine regions in Georgia, Kakheti in the east is the most famous.
