The Great Wall of China, actually a network of walls, forts, and defensive lines, begins in the east, where the “Old Dragon’s Head” appears to jut out into the Bohai Sea at Shanhaiguan. At the far western end lies Jiayuguan Fort, an impressive fortress on the edge of the Gobi Desert that is often considered the wall’s terminus. All along the route, watchtowers, forts, and winding sections of the wall offer spectacular views of the surrounding landscape. Originally built and expanded by various dynasties to protect the Chinese empire, the Wall today stands as an impressive symbol of China’s rich history and technical ingenuity.

Badaling, Mutianyu, or Simatai?

The Wall consists of several sections, each with its own character. The Mutianyu Great Wallis known for its beautifully restored walls, lush mountain scenery, and relatively peaceful atmosphere. For those seeking rougher and more authentic sections, Jinshanling Great Wall and Simatai Great Wall are absolute highlights, featuring spectacular hiking trails along steep ridges and historic watchtowers. The popular Badaling Great Wall section offers the most accessible experience and played a significant role in the wall’s modern history. For longer hikes, there are trails near Gubeikou Great Wall and Jiankou Great Wall, where the wall is wild, steep, and partially collapsed. Jiankou, in particular, is a favorite among hikers seeking a true “off the beaten track” experience, with challenging climbs and dramatic mountain scenery.

[255
600
217
post-413477","highlights","type-highlights","status-publish","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","country-china","highlight_category-hoogtepunt-en","continent_category-asia
["GET
