Arequipa and the Colca Canyon
The white city
At the foot of the majestic Misti volcano, surrounded by high-altitude deserts, thermal hot springs, salt lakes and the world's deepest gorges, lies Arequipa. Built from white volcanic rock, 'the white city' houses colonial churches, atmospheric squares and the unparalleled Santa Catalina monastery with colourful alleys and patios. A visit to the museum of the famous ice mummy Juanita, sacrificed by the Incas to the mountain gods at the time, is an unforgettable experience.
Snowy volcanoes, high mountain passes and beautiful vistas... Shepherds with herd of llamas and alpacas, vicuñas on the vast Altiplano (the Peruvian plateau)... The route to the Colca Canyon is spectacular! The hospitable Indian population in colourful costumes will be happy to introduce you to their traditional way of life. In the vertiginous gorge with the incas landscaped agricultural terraces and colonial villages float by mighty condors. With its imposing wingspan, the Andean Condor is king among the birds of prey and the absolute highlight of your visit to the Colca Canyon.
