Fishing village with black sand beaches
Fishing town limbé on the Atlantic Ocean with its famous black sand beaches is a tourist attraction. The black colour comes from the volcano 'Mount Cameroon', located just outside the city, with its 4095 meters the highest mountain in West Africa. The volcano is still active. The beautiful botanical garden on the edge of the centre is home to more than 150 different plant species. A stream of crystal clear water coming directly from Mount Cameroon runs right through this garden. The adjacent Wildlife Center, is a kind of zoo with snakes, crocodiles and monkeys, including gorillas and chimpanzees, most of which were freed from private captivity. Limbé's Fish Market (Down Beach) is one of the best places in Cameroon to eat fish. You can enjoy fresh fish, such as barracuda and capitaine, in dozens of restaurants and eateries along and on the beach. The fish is supplied by fishermen from Cameroon, Nigeria, Togo, Benin and Ghana who moor their wooden boats on the beach a little further away.
