Infinite rainforest with gorillas, forest elephants...
The Congo Basin is the second largest rainforest in the world and a lifeline for both humans and animals. It stretches across six countries including Cameroon, CAR, Congo Brazzaville and Gabon. The landscape offers a huge variety: rivers, rainforests, savannas and nut varieties. The number of animals living there is as impressive as it is special: lowland and mountain gorillas, chimpanzees, forest elephants, okapi, more than 1,000 species of birds and over 700 different fish. The wealth of tropical plants is overwhelming; 10,0000 species, 30 percent of which can only be found in the Congo basin. This rainforest is also threatened by illegal logging. There are numerous initiatives, including the Tropical Timber Program, to promote responsible forest management. The indigenous population (150 different ethnic groups!) is also actively involved.
