Slave fortress on Cape Coast Ghana
Elmina castles; this castle is the oldest and largest of the early European buildings in West Africa. The Portuguese built the fort in the 15th century, it is still in good condition. Elmina Castle was originally intended as a trading post for gold and other goods, but has also been used for a time for the slave trade. The castle is classified as a World Heritage site.
