Legendary Timbuktu
Located on the route of the great commercial caravans, Timbuktu, at the time of the Trans-Sahara Trade, was the religious, intellectual and commercial centre of Mali. This legendary desert city is surrounded by countless sand dunes and is also called the jewel of the desert. The Djinguereber Mosque from 1325, the library (Centre Ahmed Baba) full of antique Arabic manuscripts and the museum recall the heyday of this beautiful city that belongs to the World Heritage Site. Even when you walk through the narrow streets you feel the memory alive. You will pass the pit where the Touraeg had their camels drinking and which according to tradition led to the foundation of Timbuktu. From Timbuktu you can even take a camel excursion through the impressive sand dunes to a Touareg camp.
