Africa's largest lake
The Lake Victoria (also called Victoria Nyanza) is the largest lake in Africa and the second largest freshwater lake on earth. The lake is located on the border of Tanzania, Kenya and Uganda. In the lake there are a number of islands, including the Ssese Islands. Striking was the particularly rich fauna. There were about 2,500 different species of fish in Lake Victoria, while there were only over 200 species of freshwater fish throughout Europe. Unfortunately, little of this diversity is left after the Nile perch was evicted in the lake in the 1950s, a large predatory fish. On the edge of the lake are a couple of nice resorts, where it is wonderfully relaxing. A pleasant break from your safari through Kenya or Tanzania.
Lake Tanganyika and Mahale N.P.
Lake Tanganyika is also a cross-border lake, on the border with Tanzania, Burundi, Congo and Zambia. The lake is not only an important source of food for the surrounding villages, but also an important source of income through tourism. In the lake is Lupita Island, with an exclusive lodge on top, where you can enjoy a wonderfully relaxing stay. On the eastern shores of the lake liesMahale Mountains N.P. This park is one of tanzania's unique and little-visited wildlife parks. Located on Lake Tanganyika you will find mountains covered with tropical rainforest bordering on vast and deserted sandy beaches. The most unique thing about Mahale is the large group of chimpanzees that live here. Accompanied by an expert guide, you can, from the Greystoke Lodge, on foot in search of these special animals.
