Traditional stilt houses along the river
Fenghuang, located in the mountainous western part of Hunan Province, is one of China’s most beautiful towns, with traditional wooden houses lining the river, elegant bridges, and narrow alleys that exude an authentic atmosphere. Especially in the evening, when the lights reflect off the Tuojiang River, the town’s charm truly comes into its own. Along the waterfront, you’ll find the ancient city walls, narrow alleys, temples, historic residences, and iconic bridges such as the Rainbow Bridge and the North Gate Bridge. There are also several small museums and traditional Miao and Tujia cultural centers that offer insight into the ethnic minorities of the Hunan region. At the night market, countless stalls sell everything from souvenirs to street food and local snacks, such as grilled river fish, spicy noodle dishes, and unique Miao and Tujia snacks made from dried meat and pickled vegetables.
Furong, Tongren, Qianyang, and Hongjiang
Visitors to this region will find even more unique historical sites in the surrounding area. These include the picturesque town of Furong, nearby Tongren, the ancient city of Qianyang, and the well-preserved trading town of Hongjiang. Together, they form a fascinating destination for travelers who want to discover traditional China, far away from the modern megacities.
