Bhaktapur

Ancient King's Capital in the Kathmandu Valley

The evening falls and the characteristic red bricks of Bhaktapur are covered in beautiful warm light. The pointed roofs of the many temples catch the last bit of sun. Wooden ornaments and carved frames have lost none of their splendour in hundreds of years. The deep brown traditional Newari carvings are becoming increasingly difficult to distinguish from the terracotta-coloured walls. Bhaktapur slowly turns into a sepia photo. The historic setting is the setting for everyday life. The many squares, courtyards, streets and crossings seem to be from a bygone era. Combined with an unimaginable number of temples, the Bhaktapur gives a place on Unesco's World Heritage List.

The city's oldest temple is located in Dattatreya Square: the three-story Dattatreya temple from 1428, in honor of Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva. In Durbar Square, temples shine side by side with the palace, whose 55 windows are richly decorated with carvings. This was once the home of the Malla kings. Nowadays it is home to art objects from the National Art Galery.

Between temple and palace in Durbar square, residents offer fruit and vegetables for sale. Leaning against the lower stones of the five-storey Nyatapola temple, they chat with friends and family. In the side streets of Taudmadhi Square, work is being done on hand-woven rugs. Carpenters chisy pieces of wood according to centuries-old technique. Clay pots are drying in a courtyard. The temples, palaces, antique houses and ancient washing places of Bhaktapur are impressive and make Bhaktapur an unmissable destination.
