Thailand's highest peak
Doi Inthanon National Park is located in the far north of Thailand, part of the Himalayan mountains. Giew Mae Pan Nature Trail is one of the trails leading to the highest peak, Doi Ithanon. The trail winds its way up through towering forest covered in ferns and moss to a small waterfall, followed by a path with a clear view of the surrounding golden hills. You'll also see Naphamethinidon and Naphaphonphumisiri along the way, the 'Royal Twin Pagodas' that contain important Buddhist relics. Through a mountain ridge overlooking rolling blue-green mountains you reach the end point; the highest point of Thailand!
In this area, also known as the 'Roof of Thailand', several mountain tribes still live in an authentic way. Take a trek to one of their villages and spend a few days there to be initiated into 'alternating buildings' by the Karen,or in the intricate embroidery of the nomadic Hmong.
Flora and fauna
The cool high-altitude park is covered with an impenetrable blanket of jungle that is dotted with hiking trails and waterfalls. The beautiful nature of Doi Ithanon is extra beautiful from late January to February, when the Siamese sakura blossom covers the trees. The park is known for its rich bird life; birdwatchers can enjoy the migration between February and April, when the breeding season also starts. The wild life consists mainly of wild boar, gibbons, deer and forest gems. Larger animals such as elephants and tigers have since disappeared due to hunting and changing habitat.
