Vibrant capital of Trinidad
Port of Spain, located on the Gulf of Paria, is the vibrant capital of Trinidad and Tobago. The city, full of Caribbean energy, is known for its colorful culture, colonial architecture, colorful markets and cozy streets full of music, smells and local flavors. The many green parks like Queen's Park Savannah the famous Avenue, come alive in the evening and weekends with markets full of Caribbean gastronomy and a mix of music, art and nightlife. During Carnival, the city also turns into one big colorful party full of dance, music and impressive costumes.
Nature outside the city
Besides the dynamic city atmosphere, Port of Spain also offers a surprising amount of nature and relaxation. One of the most famous places is Fort George: the historic fort is located high above the city and offers a wide view over Port of Spain, the Gulf of Paria and on clear days even to Venezuela. Visit the botanical gardens, discover the extraordinary Caroni Bird Sanctuary or escape to idyllic Maracas Beach with its swaying palms and many food stalls serving the famous "bake and shark," one of Trinidad and Tobago's most famous street food dishes: deep-fried shark served in an airy, deep-fried bun and generously topped with lettuce, tomato, pineapple, cucumber, garlic sauce, tamarind sauce and spicy pepper sauce. Locals also come here to "limen," a typical local term meaning to hang out and relax with friends aak with music, food, drinks and lots of talking, on a beach, in town or just at someone's house.
