Beautiful nature, prehistoric caves, charming villages and famous vineyards
The Dordogne- Périgord is in the region Nouvelle-Aquitaine , East of Bordeaux , in the southwest of France . It is characterized by small characteristic villages, vineyards, more than 1000 castles and breathtaking nature. There is so much to experience. For example, visit the perched village Rocamadour , enjoy the varied and untouched nature or trek from cave to cave. The department is divided into four areas, each named after a characteristic color common in the area. Périgord Blanc (white) is in the center of Dordogne and is home to the capital of the department of Perigueux; it was named after the white limestone that can be found in the landscape. Périgord Noir (black) is located in the southeast of the department, a region of vast, dark deciduous forests. This region contains the town of Sarlat, as well as the spectacular Vezere Valley and the UNESCO World Heritage Sight of Grotte de Lascaux with prehistoric cave paintings. In Périgord Pourpre (purple) you will find the famous vineyards around the city Bergerac , in the south-west of the Dordogne, whose leaves turn purple in autumn. Périgord Vert (green) occupies the green area in the north of Dordogne, a paradise for outdoor enthusiasts, with lush valleys and rivers to explore.
