The rugged hinterland on the Ionian Sea
In southern Albania, between Vlorë and the border with Greece lies the Albanian Riviera, a picturesquely beautiful coastal area enclosed between the Ionian Sea and rugged mountain scenery. Nature here is wild and full of contrasts simply because of the great differences in altitude. The route from Vlorë to Sarandë passes halfway through the Llogara mountain pass (1,057m), where you have phenomenal views of the coastline. There is some habitation but high-rise buildings are virtually non-existent. It is pure nature here with a few comfortable stopping places to perch.
Wondrous rock formations and hidden beaches
Around the larger towns like Vlorë, Dhërmi, Himarë, Borsh, Sarandë, Butrint and Ksamil, many beaches are easily accessible. The real gems, however, are hidden in idyllic bays, often enclosed by jagged rock formations. Those who do not have a boat will have to walk - after driving along the coastal road - the last stretch. After a fine hike, however, the reward is great. No big crowds here but plenty of room to roll out your towel. Indulge in languid hours at the edge of the azure sea.
