The Azores and Madeira
The Azores is a subtropical archipelago off the west coast of Portugal, consisting of nine large islands and a number of small satellite islets. Part of the region's charm is the melting pot of dialects and culinary traditions, among other things. In addition, the landscapes are strikingly beautiful - soaring volcanic peaks, green hills dotted with flowers, shimmering lakes and deep blue bays. Sao Miguel is the largest of the islands, also called "the green island" because of its lush subtropical landscape. Other highlights of the archipelago include the beautiful ancient port city of Angra do Heroismo on Terceira, the vineyards of Pico - a UNESCO World Heritage Site - and the gold coast of Santa Maria. The islands are popular with divers and sailors.
Closer to the southwest coast is Madeira; this island is known for its sultry eternal spring climate. The island has pebble beaches, dramatic cliffs and spectacular mountain landscapes and especially beautiful exotic flowers. It is an ideal area for hiking, fishing, surfing and dolphin watching and whale watching.
