Chapada dos Guimarães National Park is located in the state of Mato Grosso. The word chapada is a Brazilian word and means region of steep cliffs, usually on the edge of a plateau. In this case, that is the Chapada dos Guimarães plateau, after which the park is named. It is one of the oldest plateaus on earth and is more than 700 m high. The park also consists of savannah, interrupted by stretches of Cerrado (savannah-like) forest, particularly eroded rocks and many beautiful caves and waterfalls. Among other things, the animals that can be seen are the cougar, jaguarundi, giant river otter and the black-tailed silk monkey. The waterfalls in the park include the Salgadeira waterfall, the beautiful 85 m high Véu da Noiva waterfall and the Cachoeirinha waterfalls. The Cidade de Pedra (stone city) is a rock formation that has produced special sculptures due to the influence of weather and time.
You can visit Chapada dos Guimarães from Cuiaba or combine with a visit to the North Pantanal.
