Grand, modern and traditional Muscat
Behind the large arches of the Muscat Gate, lies the capital of Oman, ready to entice visitors. The entrance reflects the city. Grand, modern and traditional at the same time. The most modern shopping centres are located next to oman's oldest souk, the Muttrah souk. Local products are displayed on this market. In the warren of alleys, the purchase of traditional silverware, carvings, clothing or incense is negotiated.
The 'Grand Mosque' named after the Sultan is the only one that is open to non-Muslims. The traditional chandeliers and hand-woven Persian carpet give this modern mosque a whirling tradition. The combination of modern architecture with traditional elements can also be found in muscat's Royal Opera House where international names are in the spotlight, just as the building itself is illuminated when it goes dark at night.
The city has everything that can be expected from a capital city: fancy restaurants, museums, hip festivals and shopping streets. Anyone who is tired of this can go all the way from Muscat. The rugged mountains are less than an hour's drive from the city.
