Bathing in natural hot springs

There is no country where bathing is as integral a part of the culture as it is in Japan. This soothing ritual is accompanied by strict etiquette. The hot springs are fed by mineral-rich water that bubbles up from the earth. Japan is an archipelago of volcanic origin. Various mountain ranges consist of dormant and active volcanoes, and there is significant geothermal activity. As a result, natural hot springs—known as onsen—can be found throughout the country. Onsen come in many varieties: from rustic pools in the midst of nature to artistic and luxurious pools in a beautifully landscaped lotus garden, from spas with various outdoor baths (rotenburo) to indoor baths surrounded by tropical plants.

The temperature and mineral composition of the spring water can vary greatly. Japanese people frequently use onsen because of the healing properties of the minerals, but bathing is also seen as a relaxing, social activity. Traditionally, onsen are for communal use, though sometimes there are separate baths for men and women. Generally, people enter the hot spring completely unclothed; swimwear is permitted only in a few places. If you prefer more privacy, choose to stay at a ryokan with private onsen. Here, you can relax and reflect on all the experiences of the day.

Hakone

Hakone is famous for its onsen, but be sure to also visit Fuji Hakone National Park, where you can take the cable car to the top. From there, you’ll enjoy a stunning view of the surrounding area, including Mt. Owakudani. Be sure to try one of Hakone’s specialties, the kuro-tamago. This is a hard-boiled egg cooked in the sulfur-rich hot springs. It’s said that eating one of these eggs will add seven years to your life!
