Walking on the volcano
Fogo is a volcanic island. It consists of a large volcano, which runs steeply into the sea on one side. Many visitors travel to Fogo to climb the pico volcano. The crater had an eruption a few years ago and a smaller crater was formed next to the large crater. According to many visitors, this is the most beautiful thing to see on the islands. The climb to the 1700 m higher crater of Cha das Caldeiras starts as soon as you leave São Filipe. The ride is a series of special vistas. There are several walks offered along the immense crater. It is also possible to take a mountain bike tour over the black slopes of the volcano. The highest point is around 3000 meters.
The capital São Filipe is very different from the cities on the other islands. It is a particularly pleasant town with beautiful buildings. The town is a candidate to become world heritage site.
