Special tribes in the Nuba Mountains
The Nuba Mountains, centrally located in Sudan, is ethnically a very interesting area. This is home to mostly black Africans, who live in tribal relationships. They resorted to the inaccessible mountains to protect themselves from slave traders and other oppressors. A wide variety of population groups is represented here, there are more than 100 languages spoken in the area! Many of these groups adhere to animist religions and still live in a very traditional way. The Nubas (collective name for all inhabitants of the Nuba Mountains) are best known for their passion for athletic competition (traditional wrestling) and their beautiful body paintings. The photographer Leni Riefenstahl has brought these groups to prominence with her famous photographs.
