Lesotho is a small kingdom completely surrounded by South Africa. Although it is an independent country, almost without exception, trips to Lesotho are combined with a trip through South Africa. Consequently, Lesotho is listed under South Africa. Lovers of the original Africa are in for a treat here. The country has a very traditional and friendly population, the Basotho. The roof of Africa
Because of its high altitude, Lesotho is called the "Roof of Africa," or also "Kingdom in Heaven. It is the only country in the world entirely above 1,000m; the lowest point is at about 1,400m! The mountain landscape is nothing short of fantastic, with high peaks, rock formations, deeply carved valleys and steep walls. You can take beautiful hikes here, as well as explore the land from the back of a horse or by bicycle. The breed of horse you will see in Lesotho is the Basuto pony, a somewhat smaller breed with exceptional stamina, strong legs and hooves. The Basotho themselves use the horse as their main means of transportation, while donkeys are often used as pack animals.
