Sustainable and remote, a unique experience

Greystoke Mahale

Remote lodge, accessible only by boat

Greystoke Mahale lies completely secluded with her back against the wooded slopes of the Mahale Mountains on a pristine white sandy beach. From the bandas you have breathtaking views over the turquoise waters of Lake Tangayika. And at the same time enjoy the impressive beauty of the Mahale Mountains, accessible only via forest trails and animal tracks. Both the mountains and the lake are the habitat of countless animals. It's probably the chimpanzees that will inspire you.

Greystoke Mahale is unique without dominating the enchanting surroundings. The six bandas are constructed with almost exclusively sustainable materials from Lake Tanganyika. The wood, for example, has been recovered from destroyed or written off 'dhows', the ladders are made of old fishing canoes and for the roofs reeds of the palm trees outside the national park are used. The bandas are tucked away in the forest boundary at the foot of the mountains, overlooking the beach and lake.

The main building is the only structure on the beach, a vantage point where you have a beautiful view over the lake and the mountains of the Congo. Enjoy your breakfast here, listening to the sounds of the chimpanzees. Finish your day at the illuminated bar on the rocks of the headland, enjoying a sundowner as the mountains in the background slowly disappear into the darkness.

And there's more to do. Hike the forest trails in search of birds and butterflies, bathe and swim in the icy waterfalls and mountain lake, kayak across the lake, fish and enjoy a drink and fresh sashimi on the warm sandy beach.

All rooms feature a en-suite bathroom, accessible by a short board-walk, showers with hot and cold running water, toilets, a dressing room and a chill-out deck.
