One of Africa's most beautiful architectures
The Tamberma Valley has a hilly, partly inhospitable landscape with the second highest mountain of Togo, the Mt Kabyé, as a literal highlight. It is one of the most beautiful areas of Togo. It is also the land of the Tamberma, who settled here, from Benin, in the seventeenth century for fear of the slave-seeking Abomey king. Tamberma architecture is one of the most beautiful architectures in Africa. The building style of the houses is most reminiscent of a fortress; they are connected by thick walls with turrets. The Tamberma still live quite traditional and in themselves. Special are also the large fetish at the entrance of their homes and the women who still carry a stone cylinder in their lips.
