Vundu Camp

Small-scale lodge in Mana Pools

Vundu Camp is tucked between ebony, tamarind and fig trees in the heart of Mana Pools,in a perfect location on the Zambezi. On the first floor of the main building – a two-storey wooden structure – you have beautiful views over the river. The bar, restaurant and lounge with library are housed here. At the front of the building is a small sandy beach, with fireplace. At the back a small 'pan' that comes wild all day long. The thatched platform next door is a lovely place to enjoy the views of wildlife and birds that come here to drink.

The thatched canvas tents have a concrete floor that is dotted with rugs, two single beds with mosquito nets, fan, a lounge area with dining table and wicker armchairs with cushions and an outdoor bathroom ensuite with shower, toilet, sink and hot and cold running water.

Vundu is owned by Zimbabwean legend Nick Murray (1967), a qualified Zim-Pro guide (perhaps the most prestigious qualification for a guide in Africa!) who spends his life mostly canoeing and guiding in Mana Polish. He has been involved in researching and monitoring the packs of wild dogs in the park. His knowledge of the area is awesome.

Tips & tops from Vundu Camp:

  • The service is extremely cordial and very personal
  • Eight spacious but simple 'tented chalets' all overlooking the Zambezi; one family tent is more spacious with two separate bedrooms and bathrooms but with a shared living room
  • "The guiding at Vundu is absolutely top-notch!"
  • Not only wild dogs but also lions 'up close and personal'? Can! Read it here, under Zimbabwe
  • Game drives in 4WD are often combined with walking safaris, mainly in Vundu Camp's private concession
  • Adventurous professionally guided canoe trips between a high concentration of hippos and crocodiles on the Lower Zambezi, from Ruckomechi to Vundu Camp or from the camp towards the further downstream Mucheni, also multi-day
  • Children +10 years are welcome
