AIRSTRIP AND RESEARCH STATIONS
When the special charter plane lands, King George Island comes into view. Outside the inky blue sea and greenish plains full of mosses, the jagged landscape shows little colour. It is only shortly before landing that you will see some buildings with bright colour accents, clean lines and even roads. Several countries have established a research station on King George Island for scientific research in the fields of biology, ecology, geology and paleontology.
You set foot near Chilean Frei Station on the Fildes Peninsula. It is a permanent base with cafeterias, a bank and a post office, hangars and homes. In the nearby Russian Bellingshausen station is even a church.
Per zodiac you reach the cruise ship, your home for the next few days. Once the anchor is lifted, the most intense part of your Antarctic adventure begins.
