Chinese/Russian city
Harbin, the capital of Heilongjiang Province in northeastern China, is known for its unique blend of Chinese and Russian influences. Due to its location near the Russian border, the city boasts unique architecture, of which the impressive Saint Sophia Cathedral is the best-known example. The central Zhongyang Street, with its European-style buildings and charming shops, is also a popular attraction for visitors. The nearby Siberian Tiger Park is home to the world’s largest breeding center for Siberian tigers. Here, you can view the majestic tigers up close from a secure sightseeing vehicle.
World-Famous: Harbin Ice Festival
Harbin is best known worldwide for its annual Harbin International Ice and Snow Festival, one of the largest ice and snow festivals in the world. During the winter months (December through February), enormous palaces, castles, and sculptures are built from blocks of ice sourced from the Songhua River, which runs right through the city. In the evening, the artworks are illuminated with spectacular, colorful lights, creating an impressive winter landscape. The festival attracts millions of visitors every year. Be sure to wear gloves, as temperatures during the winter months can drop as low as -15°C, with occasional lows of up to -30°C.
