Majuli

Migratory birds, Satra monasteries and Mising villages

Majuli is the largest river island in the world with an isolated location amidst one of the most dynamic river deltas on earth; in the mighty Brahmaputra River in Assam, northeast India. It has a rich biodiversity, and the wetlands, riverine forests and water bodies with which it is covered make it a hotspot for birds. In addition to a bird population of 186 species, it is visited by countless migratory birds in winter. Famous bird watching spots include Sakuli beel, Borhula Pathar, Doriya Dubi, Bhereki Bheel, where species such as the great adjudant stork, pelican, Siberian crane and whistling teal have been observed.

Satras

Other attractions on Majuli include the dozens of "Satras," Neo-Vaishnavite monasteries, the most important of which are the Auniati Satra, Dakhinpat Satra and Garmur Satra. These monasteries are open to visitors and offer a glimpse into the religious and cultural practices of the island. The satras are known for their traditional mask art, ancient dance form 'Bhaona' and ancient manuscripts.

Mising villages

The island is divided into numerous small villages and hamlets. The inhabitants consist mainly of the Mising and Deori people, known for their unique stilt houses and hand-woven textiles. Their villages offer insight into a traditional way of life that is slowly changing. With the recent construction of a bridge across the Brahmaputra, Majuli is at the dawn of a new era. This bridge promises better access to a special destination where past and future meet in a picturesque landscape. Where the world can't find you...
