A mountain with a soul
Lonely and majestic, Mount Fuji (Fuji-San or Fujiyama) towers over the landscape. The dormant volcano is the highest mountain in Japan (3,776m). According to Shintoism, Fuji-San has a soul, and the flanks are inhabited by gods (kami). Every year, many thousands of pilgrims flock to this sacred mountain, which has been listed on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 2013.
In the summer months it is possible to climb Mount Fuji and see the sunrise at the top. However, that challenging physical effort is not necessary to enjoy impressive views of the almost perfectly konisch shaped mountain. The Five Fuji Lakes, Hakone and the Izu Peninsula are just a few destinations where Fuji-San dominates the panorama. Also, the mountain can be seen from the Shinkansen train between tokyo and Osaka. On clear mornings it is even possible to see Fuji-San from high-altitude viewpoints in Tokyo.
