Tokyo

Tokyo is a city of extremes

The vast metropolis of Tokyo is a city of extremes, where ancient temples and serene Japanese gardens blend effortlessly with futuristic skyscrapers, neon-lit streets, and the latest technological innovations. This is what makes Japan’s capital so special and fascinating. It’s no wonder, then, that Tokyo is often the starting and/or ending point of your tour of Japan. The bustling capital offers a vast array of neighborhoods, each with its own distinct character. Early in the morning, you can visit the Tsukiji Fish Market, where more than 2,000 metric tons of fish are traded. Or visit Ebisu Yokocho, one of the city’s most traditional neighborhoods, where the lively narrow streets are lined with traditional Japanese taverns selling finger food, traditional snacks, and drinks. Stroll through historic Asakusa with its famous Sensō-ji Temple, experience the energy of Shibuya Crossing, explore the luxury boutiques of Ginza, or immerse yourself in the colorful world of manga and electronics in Akihabara. Be sure to visit the Meiji Shrine, Tokyo’s most famous shrine, dedicated to the spirit of the late Emperor Meiji, and the sprawling gardens of Shinjuku Gyoen. Be sure to take a stroll down Kappabashi Street, where sampuru (mock-up food displays for shop windows) is sold. From the 333-meter-high Tokyo Tower, you’ll enjoy a magnificent view of the metropolis, especially in the evening when the neon lights illuminate the city in a kaleidoscope of colors.

Culinary Tokyo

Tokyo is also one of the world’s top culinary destinations and boasts more Michelin-starred restaurants than any other city. But it’s the small, authentic eateries that make the city so special. Enjoy fresh sushi at the Tsukiji Outer Market, slurp a steaming bowl of ramen at a local noodle bar, savor crispy tempura, yakitori straight from the grill, or an elaborate omakase menu where the chef serves his favorite dishes. Round off the evening in a cozy izakaya or one of the narrow yokocho alleys lined with lively bars and food stalls, where you’ll discover the true flavors of Japan.
