Bustling Georgetown
Georgetown, penang's biggest draw, is a bustling, messy, hectic city with many Chinese influences. Visit the various temples of different faiths and clanhouses such as Leon San Tong Khoo Kongsi,the Peranakan museum,the special boutique hotels and hip coffee bars, and sample the world-famous street food. Try the Hokkien Mee, Assam Laksa and Char Kway Teow and head to the stalls at Lorong Baru in the evening for the best street food. The inner city has been decorated with street art by the Lithuanian artist since the George Town Festival celebrations in 2012Ernest Zacharevic, a pleasure to walk around.
Near the airport is the 'Temple of the Azure Cloud',
Snake Temple,
which was built in memory of a Buddhist monk, Chor Soo Kong. Legend has it that he offered protection to snakes in the jungle. When the temple was finished in 1850, the snakes moved in on their own never to leave. Just to be safe, the snakes are milked, but they still have their long, hollow fangs that allow them to inject venom...
The best time to visit the island is with Chinese New Year; Then Penang is truly magnificent. There are celebrations everywhere, the temples are beautifully lit and fireworks are set off day and night.
