One of the oldest rainforests in the world
Royal Belum State Park is a huge rainforest in the northern part of the peninsula. It is part of the larger Belum-Temenggor,which is shared with Thailand. The park is more than 130 million years old.
This ancient forest includes the habitat of 14 (!) of the world's most endangered mammals, including the Malay tiger,Withandgibbon, Asian elephant, Malay bear,Sumatran rhino and Malay Tapir. However, the chances of these animals showing themselves are quite small. Royal Belum is also one of the rare places where all eight species of hornbills can be spotted.
Lake Temenggor
In the park is Lake Temenggor, a man-made lake in what was once a forest area. In the reservoir are many islands, the peaks of the original mountains and hills. The variety of freshwater fish such as the Kelah, Toman, Sebarau, Tenggalan and Baung makes Lake Temenggor a valhalla for fishermen.
The details of the park are scattered around the lake. You will make many boat trips to explore the forest, where a visit to an authentic Orang Asli dorp, bathing in one of the many beautiful waterfalls and a search for the enchantingly beautiful Rafflesia should not be missed!
