Shells and palm trees
Chances are you'll be the first to leave a print in the soft white sands on the coast. Sri Lanka has so much beach, that a large part remains untouched. The country is surrounded on all sides by beaches and equally amiable everywhere. Everywhere travellers will find the most beautiful beaches and most idyllic spots.
Each beach has its own character. For example, the beaches at Tangalla are only populated by a few washed-up shells. In Unawatuna it is busy. The music from bars and restaurants lets guests dance barefoot in the sand. In the north, Nilaveli is the starting point for divers and snorkelers. Many beaches in this area are a parking lot for old wooden fishing boats. Boats are also waiting in the port of Mirissa. They'll take you out into the ocean. It's a small trip, but that's quickly forgotten when the blue whale shows up.
