Rugged mountain landscapes and deep gorges
Taiwan boasts an impressive variety of natural parks, from rugged mountain landscapes and deep gorges to tropical forests and spectacular coastal areas. Thanks to its (sub)tropical location, the island has great biodiversity and its national parks are among the most beautiful in Asia.
Taroko National Park is one of Taiwan's most famous natural areas with spectacular hiking trails along suspension bridges and waterfalls to the impressive Taroko Gorge. Despite earthquake damage in recent years, parts of the park remain accessible and impressive. Yushan National Park is home to the famous Jade Mountain, at 3,952 meters the highest mountain in Taiwan and Northeast Asia. The park offers alpine landscapes, primeval forests and a wide variety of plant and animal species.
Yangmingshan National Park, near Taipei is known for its volcanic landscape, hot springs, fumaroles, grassy plains and colorful blossoms in spring. An ideal destination for a day trip from the capital. Shei-Pa National Park, a hiker's paradise with high mountain peaks, deep valleys and vast forests. Rare species such as the Formosan black bear live here. Alishan National Scenic Area, famous for its ancient cypress forests, misty mountain landscapes, spectacular sunrises and historic mountain railroad. East Rift Valley, a scenic valley between two mountain ranges, with rice fields, hot springs, biking trails and authentic native villages.
Spectacular coastal areas
Taiwan's oldest national park , Kenting, is located in the far south of the island. You will find tropical beaches, clear blue water, coral reefs, limestone formations and a pleasant climate throughout the year. The nearby island of Xiaoliuqiu is popular for snorkeling and sea turtle spotting. Taijiang National Park is a unique wetland area with mangrove forests, lagoons, salt fields and a rich bird population.
