Lhasa

LAND OF THE GODS

High in the mountains of the Himalayas you will find Lhasa, the spiritual center of the Tibetan Buddhist world and the traditional capital of Tibet.

The ancient city is dotted with the most magnificent monasteries and temples. The oldest Buddhist temple in Tibet, the sacred Jongkang Temple is a fare for pilgrimage to Lhasa for pilgrims from far and wide.

Before his exile, the Dalai Lama lived here in the impressive white with reddish-brown Potala 'winter' Palace. A huge complex where you can see how the great spiritual leader has lived in the countless rooms. In the beautifully   landscaped park of the summer residence, the Norbulingka Palace, there is a lot of entertainment with music, singing and dance in the summer months. Make sure you're there during the annual Yogurt or ShotOng festival celebrated here.

Just outside Lhasa are two very special Buddhist monasteries, Drepung and Sera. Drepung was the largest monastery of all religions in the world and is still of Tibet. The origin of the name Sera is a mystery. One suspects that the place where this monastery was built was surrounded by an oasis of wild roses, se ra in Tibetan. Imagine walking through the corridors of this largely restored complex full of magnificent frescoes and watching monks discuss Buddhist teachings with each other on a daily basis. Where the world can't find you...
