Diving on Saba

Dormant volcano and coral reefs

With a rich underwater world, Saba is a true paradise for diving enthusiasts. Saba Marine Park surrounds the entire island and encompasses the waters and seabed from the high tide line to a depth of 200 feet (about 60 meters), as well as the offshore submarine mountains. Because of the steep coastline, diving from shore is prohibited. All diving must be done with one of Saba's authorized dive centers. Their expertise contributes to a safe, comfortable and educational diving experience. The Marine Park is characterized by a dormant volcano rising steeply from the ocean. True reefs can be found in a few locations within the Marine Park.

Turtles, whales and parrotfish

Thanks to the protection of their food sources in the Saba Marine Park, both green sea turtles and hawksbill turtles thrive around Saba. As divers approach slowly, the turtles continue to feed while being photographed. Due to fishing restrictions, sea snails, Saba lobsters and various species of crabs can be seen regularly during most dives. With luck, you may also encounter some other permanent residents such as hammerhead and whale sharks, manta rays and spotted eagle rays and long-tailed seahorses. In the winter months, you can sometimes hear whales singing to each other or even see them jumping.

Saba is blessed with an abundance of fish in the Marine Park. This is the result of restrictions on fishing, anchoring and extensive dive training on the rules and regulations. Thus, almost every dive brings a wide variety of parrotfish, triggerfish, angelfish, snappers and grouper. In sandy areas, lizard fish, sand divers, flying gurnards and garden eels predominate.
