Photography trip to the owls of Norway

Must-do for birdwatchers and nature lovers

This six-day trip to owl Norway is a real must-do for birders and nature lovers alike. A local ecoguide will take you deep into the forests of southeastern Norway, to the hunting grounds of the Lapland Owl and Rough-legged Owl where you can admire and photograph these impressive birds naturally and often in action.

Respectfully the most unique photos

When evening falls and from shortly before sunrise until the owls stop hunting you will stay with the owls with respect for the animals and nature being paramount. Thus, no baiting methods are used but guides know exactly the right places where you can wait for the owls in full belief that the animals in a natural and undisturbed situation give more variety in photo opportunities. Depending on the season, this allows you to responsibly visit nesting sites and watch the chicks make their way to the wider world. A trip full of magical moments where you will take these magnificent predators into your heart. Where the world can't find you...

Tips & Tops photography trip to the Owls of Norway:

  • The best time for this trip is in June and July as this is the nesting season
  • The guides spend a lot of time with the owls and normally the owls are used to them being there without disturbing them. By the time the chicks leave the nest, the owls trust the guides enough and it should not be a problem to photograph the chicks
  • During the summer months, the lapland owl is also active during daylight, the owls are mainly active from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 a.m.
  • Unlike the lapland owl, the rough-legged owl is mainly active at night which makes it more difficult to photograph them, which is why during the tour you will visit nesting sites
  • The rough-legged owl nests in old burrows of the black woodpecker and nest boxes made by the guides
  • To catch a glimpse of these small but beautiful owls, the guides gently scratch the tree in which the owls nest after which the owl briefly pokes its head out of the nest to see who is scratching the tree
  • Jungle owl chicks become mobile soon after leaving the nest, so the opportunity to photograph the chicks is quite short
  • Norway has many more impressive wildlife and nature besides owls, so be sure to combine this adventure with a varied round trip
