Marine wildlife
The Península Valdés Peninsula is one of the world's largest marine reserves. Many sea creatures seek the tranquility of the Golfo Nuevo to mate or give birth; you can observe the colonies of sea lions, elephant seals and penguins up close. At every time of the year there is a spectacular natural phenomenon, such as large breeding colonies of sea lions being attacked from the sea by hunting orcas, and the sometimes bloody battles between the males (bulls) elephant seals. The attraction, however, is the Southern Hijackers, rare whales that gather in the bay with their calves in the period June to December. South of the Península Valdés is the penguin colony of Punta Tombo. This is, outside antarctica, the largest penguin colony in the world.
