Architecture from bygone eras
Mexico is known for its many archaeological sites and especially for the large complexes with imposing structures of the former Maya. A visit to some of these Mayan temples should not be missed during your visit to Mexico. There is plenty of choice, some more impressive than others, but we will list a few for you.
Get up early for a leisurely visit to the most famous temple complex, Chichén Itzá, declared one of the world's seven new wonders of the world in 2007. Surrounding the city's main attraction, the great pyramid of Kukulcán, are several smaller ruins.
Travel to Uxmal and admire one of the best-preserved temples in the city where about 25,000 Maya lived at the time. Maya city Palenque is located in the middle of the jungle. While the howler monkeys shout at you from the trees, you climb the temples where you may also enter to see the tombs. The Sorcerer's Pyramid, with its height of about 40 meters, is extremely interesting to see.
On a high cliff on the clear blue Caribbean Sea is the Mayan city of Tulum where an important port was once located. The temple is beautifully located in the state of Quintana Roo in Yucatan on the beach and therefore very popular. After an early visit, it is time for a refreshing dip in the sea and you can relax on the small beach next to the temple.
Coba was once one of the largest Mayan cities in the country. You can visit part of the temple, but most of it is hidden in the surrounding jungle. As in Uxmal, a high period is the central point of the city.
