Birkat al Mauz

Battered and run down, but no less beautiful. Ruins in small villages deserve at least as much attention during your trip as the gleaming structures in the big cities.

Birkat al Mauz

An oasis inhabited only by birds

Sometimes a small wandering makes a big difference. Those who leave the main route and make a small twist on their way from Muscat to Nizwa will arrive at the ghost town of Birkat Al Mauz. And ends up in a bygone era. In 1959, the last inhabitants left Birkat, fleeing the war between the Sultan and Imam. The oasis is now only inhabited by birds. Date plantations are wild, yet the palms still carry dates. Everything else seems to be standing still. Doors are ajar, but the valley is forgotten and abandoned. Until someone makes another little wandering.
