The "Outlying Island Region" is divided into Penghu, Kinmen and Lienchiang (Matsu).
Each island or archipelago its own character
Off the east coast of Taiwan, you will find paradisiacal volcanic Green Island, full of lush greenery and colorful coral reefs. Tropical pearl Lambai Island also calls for an underwater dive as this picturesque coral island is the habitat of huge numbers of sea turtles.
The columnar Penghu archipelago on the country's west coast was formed millions of years ago by volcanic eruptions and solidified lava resulting in stunningly rugged rock formations and towering basalt columns. In spring and summer, the fireworks festival takes place here. You will also find azure blue sea and relax on bright white sandy beaches.
Kimmen and Matsu lie on the southeast coast of China, and are geographically part of China, but in practice are administratively and militarily heavily fortified territory of Taiwan.
Once a closed military area, Kimmen has become a popular vacation destination. Visit a traditional village such as Shuitou and explore the authentic Hokkien-style settlements with the famous dovetailed roofs and sample local specialties such as peanut nougat and the distinctive sorghum liqueur with a characteristic strong taste.
The Matsu Archipelago has 36 islands where you can see Cold War history reflected in huge underground bunkers and tunnels but also admire beautiful Mediterranean-looking granite fishing villages. In spring and summer, if you are lucky, you can experience the natural phenomenon of the "Blue Tears" here, where bioluminescent algae illuminate the coastlines enchantingly blue in spring and summer.
