Botswana's oldest game reserve
Scenically, Moremi Game Reserve is hailed as one of Africa's most beautiful parks, where even the most experienced safari connoisseurs will never be bored. Indeed, the diversity of big game is second to none, and bird lovers can look forward to more than 500 species here. This region was once traditional hunting grounds of the Batawana tribe. In 1963, they ceded part of their land to make it a game reserve, the first protected area within the vast Okavango Delta. In gratitude, the new wildlife sanctuary was named after members of the Batawana tribe, Chief Moremi III and his wife, who spearheaded the establishment of the wildlife sanctuary. .
Big Five
Moremi Game Reserve is a relatively dry headland that is part of the Okavango Delta. The natural boundary is the Khwai River, one of the main arteries of the delta region. The largest island in the Okavango Delta, Chiefs' Island, is also part of the Moremi Game Reserve. The water is never far away, but Moremi is very accessible to 4WDs, making it a truly magnificent area for land safaris. Open grass plains, swamps, forested areas with robust mopane trees and marula trees, it provides a very varied landscape where many animal species feel at home. Look out for the Big Five: elephant, lion, leopard, buffalo and rhino. Both black and white rhinos have been reintroduced - after decades of intensive poaching - making the Big Five complete again. In addition, hunt for all those special species, which are as findable in few places as they are here, such as brown hyena, big-eared fox, wild dogs, sable antelope and swamp antelope (lechwe).
