Capital of republic of Congo
Brazzaville is the capital of the Republic of Congo and is located on the Congo River, directly opposite Kinshasa, the capital of neighboring Congo-Kinshasa. The city, built in 1880, takes its name from Pierre Savorgnan de Brazza, a French naturalized explorer of Italian descent. Until the 1960s, the city had a distinctly European part (the centre of the city) and an African part (Poto-Poto, Bacongo and Makélékélé). Brazzaville was also the scene of regional conflicts for many years. Now, with its many restaurants and hotels, Brazzaville is an excellent starting point for a trip through the tropical rainforests of Congo Brazzaville.
