Desert area with the oldest lava lake in the world
The vast desert area of the Danakil depression is one of the most sparsely populated and inaccessible areas of Ethiopia. It is the area of the nomadic Afar, a people who have survived in these harsh conditions for thousands of years.
You may not realize it immediately, but you are 120 meters below sea level. The warmth you feel when you are here for some time is because the earth's crust here is so thin that fresh lava is constantly pushed up. This heat has also led to the formation of huge salt flats that are difficult to access. Also a source of heat is the Erta Ale, Ethiopia's most active volcano. Take a walk to this volcano, at the top you will be surprised: you will see here the oldest lava lake in the world.
