Samburu, Shaba and Buffalo Springs
As you descend from the plateau near Mount Kenyato the area of the Samburutribes, the landscape becomes increasingly drier and more ferocious. In this area are three contiguous game reserves namely Samburu National Reserve, Shaba and Buffalo Springs. The reserves are just above the equator. A remote wilderness with a unique flora and fauna. Through this area, the Ewaso Nyiro River, which is overgrown on both banks with acacia, palm trees and tamarinds, is a gathering place for large numbers of wildlife. The Samburu game reserve, together with Masai Mara game reserve, boasts the largest concentrations of game. The Grevy's zebra and the giraffe gazelle (Gerenuk) occur only in the north in Kenya, as well as the Beisa oryx and the Somali ostrich.
Samburu National Reserve; one of our personal favorites.
