Fire dancing in Togo
The city of Sokodé has two faces: it is Islamic on the one hand, but also the animist faith has a strong presence there. It's the habitat of the Tem tribe. This tribe is known for its traditional fire dances. In the past, after returning from war, the men of the village were welcomed with this fire dance. The rousing and penetrating drum beats put the dancers into a trance after which they cover themselves with piping hot coals from the fire. Nowadays, the dancers also walk over the piping hot coals. A special and baffling spectacle.
