Lake Tanganyika

Africa's largest lake

In the far north of Zambia lies Lake Tanganyika, forming a natural border with Tanzania. Lake Tanganyika is the deepest lake in Africa and is home to more than 300 species of tropical fish. On the lake lies the only port town that zambia is rich, Mpulungu, where the population lives from fishing. On the shore of the lake you will find sandy beaches with palm trees, where it is pleasant to stay after an exciting safari. Nearby are the Kalambo Falls, one of the highest waterfalls in Africa. Adjacent to the lake is the Sumbu N.P., bisected by the Lufubu River. During safaris you will see various antelope species, an exuberant bird life, but also bigger game like elephants, buffalo and lions.

Boat trip to Burundi

A special experience is a trip across the lake, in the heart of Africa, with the MV Liemba, an old German cargo ship that now serves as a ferry. The boat sails once a week from Mpulungu to Kigoma in Tanzania and Bujumbura in Burundi. A trip with this boat gives you a good impression of life on and on the water.
