The jewel of Bhutan
The Taktsang monastery can be felt in the calves. But so far, few visitors have complained about it. The climb to the monastery, better known as Tigers Nest,is more than worth the effort. The Buddhist complex balances on a ledge, more than nine hundred meters high, leaning against the rock face. The legend of exactly how the monastery ended up here wanders into the depths of the Paro Valley. Residents can tell you how Guru Rinpoche arrived here in the seventeenth century on the back of a tigress and spread Buddhism across Bhutan.
Although Tigers Nest is not bhutan's most accessible monastery, it still attracts many visitors. The complex consists of several temples, built over the caves where the guru meditated long ago. Rituals take place inside and you can also make a sacrifice. Outside, the view demands all the attention.
