Trekking through undiscovered area
All the way to the tree line. And beyond that. Over high mountain passes, past waterfalls and through bamboo forests. Glaciers freeze the landscape. Where nothing grows anymore, bright blue lakes at kilometres of height provide colour. The white peaks of the Himalayas tower high above all this and leave no doubt: they are the rulers of this area.
However, it is possible to penetrate this area. With the help of local guides, and yaks carrying your luggage, you'll discover one of the most undiscovered areas in the world. Through this remote and almost impassable region, an old path winds. Used centuries ago as a trade route. Now only occasionally walked by the inhabitants of the small villages, which are often closed off months a year from the rest of Bhutan. Himalayan sheep, takins, bears and snow leopards also cross the route. Paw prints betray their presence. The 357-kilometre Lunana Snowman trek is the most challenging route. It leads hikers in a month over eight mountain passes at an average height of four thousand meters. In this remote area there are no villages and camping is the only option. You can't get any closer to nature. But also for less fanatical trekkers there are plenty of options in Bhutan. The five-day Busy Path Trek on the trade route between Paro and Thimphu along monasteries, lakes and rivers requires fewer calf muscles but is equally beautiful.
