Life among the lions

Tail low and head in the air: the Asian lion is ruler of the Gir Forest,in Gujarat, western India. The nature park is the only remaining natural habitat of this lion. In the forests it is rarely quiet with three hundred different bird species. On the open fields, only the rustling of dry grass in the wind sounds.   A large number of leopards also roam the park. And this corner of India is a paradise for many more rare species. Still, it's not always easy to spot them. The Chital deer is as a favorite prey constantly on its guard. But the menu of hunters in the park is varied: Sambar deer, Nilgai antelope and Chinkara gazelles. And the four horns of the Chousingha, this antelope does not always protect against the powerful claws of the predators.

The laws of nature apply, in the Gir Forest National Park. However, there is also a special piece of culture in this area: that of the Maldhari shepherds, which means 'keeper (dhari) of the herd (mal)'. For generations they have lived in small villages in the park. The lawns do not belong exclusively to deer and antelopes, buffalo and herds of goats also graze here. The Maldhari herd their cattle right through the rugged wilderness.
